निमित्त और उपादान-राधा ने कृष्ण जी से कहा मुझे बाँसुरी सुनाओ, सुनने की तीव्र इच्छा थी, दुनिया का ये स्वभाव है कि जिसको जो कला आती है, उसे करने को कहो तो वह पहले फूलता है, कृष्णजी ने कहा आज हमारा सुनाने का मन नहीं है, किसी को अपने पक्ष में करना है तो उसकी प्रशंसा कर दो, तब राधा ने कहा, 'अर्थ तो है तुम्हारी श्वाँस का, वरना ये टुकड़ा है बाँस का' असंख्यात जीव भगवान् के चरणों में बैठते हैं, तो भी क्षायिक सम्यक्त्व सबको नहीं होता, निमित्त तो सबके लिए बराबर है पर उपादान नहीं है, इसलिए जरूरी नहीं कि निमित्त है तो उपादान जाग ही जाए, कृष्णजी प्रशंसा सुनकर बजाने बैठ गए, घण्टों निकल गये, अब राधा को भूख लगी यदि काम बन्द कराना है तो निन्दा कर दो, राधा ने कहा- 'अर्थ क्या है तुम्हारी श्वाँस का, गर न होता ये टुकड़ा बाँस का', कृष्ण जी ने बाँसुरी बजाना बन्द कर दिया, बताओं दोनों में कौन मुख्य है ? वस्तुत: यदि श्वाँस में जुकाम हो जाए तब कितनी अच्छी बाँसुरी हो स्वर नहीं आयेगा, श्वाँस अच्छी है और बाँसुरी फटी है तो भी सुर नहीं आता, अत: निमित्त उपादान की बहुत बड़ी महिमा है, बाँसुरी की उतनी ही कीमत जितनी श्वाँस की।

Instrumental and material cause: Radha begged Krishna to play the flute, longing to hear it. It is the world's way that if you ask a skilled person to display his art, he first swells with pride. Krishna said he did not feel like playing; to win someone over, praise him. So Radha said, 'The meaning lies in your breath, else this is but a piece of bamboo.' Countless souls sit at the Lord's feet, yet not all attain kshayik samyaktva; the instrumental cause is equal for all but the material cause is not, so an instrumental cause does not necessarily awaken the material cause. Flattered, Krishna sat and played for hours. When Radha grew hungry and wished to stop him, she reproached: 'What is the meaning of your breath, were it not for this piece of bamboo?' Krishna stopped playing. Which of the two is primary? In truth, with a cold in the breath even the finest flute yields no note, and a good breath with a cracked flute also gives no tune; hence both instrumental and material causes have great glory, the flute worth exactly as much as the breath.
