Our twelve reflections (a poem): Kings, chieftains and emperors ride on elephants; for the sake of money the soul leaves home and wanders the world. Armies, gods, parents and family - none can save a being who has no money. Without money the poor man grieves, and even the rich are enslaved by craving, crying, "O God, open me a lottery of twenty lakhs." One is born alone and dies alone; in this world there is none one's own but the wife. Where even the body is not one's own, no one there is one's own; only through the power of money do strangers become "mine." This body is but a cage of bone draped in a skin-sheet with a jewel; anointing it with oil and powder, one takes the world captive. In the force of the sleep of delusion the worldly one wanders forever, hoarding money with no news of God. When the true guru wakes one and the sleep of delusion subsides, still, shown money, one worries about the shop. Fill the lamp of knowledge with the oil of austerity and search the house, casting off illusion; guarding goods all night lest a thief carry them off. Casting off the five great vows and the five kinds of vigilant conduct, one daily makes love with the five sins. "May I become master of all - the fourteen-rajju-high sky and the man-shaped universe - grant this grace, O God." Know that wealth, grain, gold and royal pleasures are all easily got; rare is it to get a drink of water in a miser's house. The wishing-tree grants joy when asked, but worrying breeds worry night long; without departing this world, only the wife gives pleasure. One is born alone and dies alone; without practising illusion, how does one become a millionaire?
