अहमेदं एदमहं अहमेदस्सेव होमि मम एदं। अण्णं जं परदव्वं सचित्ताचित्त मिस्सं वा।। आसि मम पुव्वमेदं अहमेदं चावि पुव्वकालम्हि। होहिदि पुणोवि मज्झं अहमेदं चावि होस्सामि।। एयं तु असम्भूदं आदिवियप्पं करेदि संमूढो। भूदत्थं जाणंतो ण करेदि दु तं असंमूढो।।

ज्ञानी और अज्ञानी का लक्षण- जो पुरुष अपने से अन्य पर द्रव्य, सचित्त स्त्री पुत्रादिक, अचित्त धन धान्यादिक अथवा मिश्र ग्राम नगरादिक हैं उन्हें यह समझता है कि मैं यह हूँ, यह द्रव्य मुझ स्वरुप है, मैं इसका हूँ, यह मेरा है, यह मेरा पहले था, इसका मैं भी पहले था, यह मेरा भविष्य में होगा, मैं भी इसका भविष्य में होऊँगा, ऐसा झूठा आत्म विकल्प करता है वह मूढ़ है, मोही है, अज्ञानी है, और जो पुरुष परमार्थ वस्तुस्वरुप को जानता हुआ वैसा झूठा विकल्प नहीं करता वह मूढ़ नहीं ज्ञानी है।

The mark of the wise and the ignorant: one who regards other substances outside himself - a sentient wife or children, insentient wealth and grain, or mixed things like village and town - as "I am this, this substance is my very form, I belong to it, it is mine, it was mine before, I too was its before, it will be mine in the future, I too will be its" - such a person who makes this false identification of the self is deluded, attached and ignorant; but one who, knowing the true nature of things, makes no such false identification is not deluded - he is the wise one.
