राजकुमार के खजाने में साँप रहता था, कोषाध्यक्ष और मन्त्री को देखकर फुङ्कार मारता था, लेकिन राजकुमार को देखकर हट जाता था, वह राजकुमार के पिता का जीव था, राजा परिग्रह आसक्ति के कारण अपने ही भण्डार में मरकर सर्प बना था, मुनिराज के मुख से पिता के पूर्व भव सुनकर राजकुमार को वैराग्य हो गया।

A serpent lived in the prince's treasury; it hissed at the treasurer and minister but drew back at the sight of the prince, for it was the soul of the prince's father. Through attachment to possessions the king, dying, had become a serpent in his own treasury. Hearing his father's past birth from the muni, the prince was seized with detachment.
