Svadhyaya—'the deck of cards, faith on the path of liberation': fifteen minutes of self-study changed a life. A gambler, on seeing a monk, took two vows—daily worship, and fifteen minutes of self-study with five minutes of contemplation. One day he reached the temple late, glimpsed the Lord through a window, but had no scripture for study, so he took his playing cards and began contemplating. On the ace (one) he reflected: surely I am one, pure, made of perception and knowledge, ever formless; not even an atom of any other substance is mine. On the two: as a churning-rod revolves in the pot by a two-ended rope, so this soul revolves in the pot of samsara through the two ends of attachment and aversion. On the three: wrong faith, knowledge and conduct are the three causes of samsara; right faith, knowledge and conduct are the three causes of liberation. On the four: through the four passions one wanders in the four states. Five sins cause the five cycles; of the six leshyas three are auspicious and three inauspicious; indulging the seven vices causes wandering through the seven hells; he had not given up the eight prides and eight faults nor held the eight root-virtues; not known the nine categories, not held the ten dharmas, not observed the eleven pratimas, not practised the twelve austerities. 'Thus, contemplating the twelve reflections, detachment arose,' then I shall observe the thirteenfold conduct and attain liberation. Reflecting in straight order: a man comes alone and goes alone, and need take no body again if he has held the three jewels, studied the four Anuyogas, held the five great vows, observed the six essentials, contemplated the seven principles—he will be freed from the eight karmas, counted among the nine gods, the ten dharmas will arise, he will no longer be a slave of the mind, the senses will not rule him, and the soul will be sovereign.
