स्वारथ का संसार- बड़ा लड़का जङ्गल में निकलने वालों को लूटकर धन लाता था और घर चलाता था, एक दिन किसी बाबा को लूटने लगा, बाबा ने कहा संसार स्वार्थी है, क्यों मोह के वश हो पाप कमाकर दुर्गति में जाते हो, वह बोला हमारा सारा परिवार हमसे बहुत प्यार करता है, मेरा जहाँ पसीना गिरता है वहाँ सभी लोग खून बहाने को तैयार रहते हैं, बाबा ने कहा एक बार उनके सच्चे प्यार की परीक्षा कर लो, बाबा के कहे अनुसार घर जाकर बहाना बना कर लेट गया और जोर–जोर से कराहने लगा, बाबा वैद्य का भेष धारण करके आया और बोला मेरे पास मरे को जिन्दा करने की दवा है, लेकिन जो इसे पियेगा वो मर जायेगा और यह जिन्दा हो जायेगा, अभी तक जो विना उसके जीवित रहने को तैयार नहीं थे, रो रहे थे, अब वे सभी कहने लगे, हम स्वयं कमा कर खायेंगे, यहाँ तक कि माँ ने भी कह दिया कि हम समझ लेंगे कि हमारे छह ही बेटे हैं, वैद्य ने कहा इस दवा को हम पी लें? सबने कहा बड़ी कृपा होगी, स्वार्थी संसार देखकर उसको संसार से वैराग्य हो गया, सोचने लगा स्वार्थियों के लिये पाप करके हम दुर्गति में क्यों जायें और वह आत्म कल्याण के मार्ग पर आगे बढ़ गया।

An elder son supported his family by robbing travelers. One day he tried to rob a sage, who said the world is selfish. The son boasted his family loved him deeply and would shed blood where he sweat. The sage told him to test their love. Feigning sickness at home, he groaned loudly; the sage came disguised as a physician and said he had a medicine to revive the dying, but whoever drank it would die in the patient's place. Those who had wept, unwilling to live without him, now said they would earn their own living—even his mother said she would count her sons as six. When the physician offered to drink it himself, all begged him to. Seeing the selfishness of the world, the son grew detached, thinking, 'Why sin for the selfish and fall into ruin?' and set out on the path of self-welfare.
