वर्ष में एक झूठ– एक सेठ को एक नौकर मिल गया जिसका वेतन था, भोजन, वस्त्र एवं एक वर्ष में एक झूठ बोलना। वर्ष पूर्ण होने पर वेतन की तिथि निश्चित कर दी गयी। सेठानी से नौकर ने कहा कि आप के सुन्दर और सुशील होने पर भी सेठ कहाँ जाते हैं पता नहीं? मैं दिन भर दुकान चलाता हूँ। सेठानी ने कहा क्यों करें तब नौकर ने कहा सेठ की एक मूँछ निकाल दो, इससे चेहरे की सुन्दरता समाप्त हो जायेगी, जब सेठ जी रात्रि में सो जायें, तब आप छुरी से मूँछ निकाल देना, उधर सेठ से कहा कि आप दिन भर दुकान में रहते हो, सेठानी दिन भर ताला डाल कर पता नहीं कहाँ जाती हैं, आज जब आप सो जाओगे तब वह आपका गला काटेगी, सावधान रहना, सेठ दुकान से आकर चुप चाप सोने का बहाना करने लगे, तभी सेठानी छुरा लेकर आयी, और जैसे ही मुख से वस्त्र हटाया तो सेठ ने उसके हाथ का छुरा छीन कर उसी को मारने तैयार हो गये, तब नौकर ने कहा हुजूर सुनिये, ऐसा मत करिये हमने अपना वेतन लिया है, यानि एक झूठ बोला है। 'जब एक झूठ से प्राणों पर खतरा आ सकता है तो अनेक बार झूठ बोलने पर क्या होगा'।

One lie a year: A merchant hired a servant whose wages were food, clothing, and the right to tell one lie a year. When the year ended and payday was fixed, the servant told the mistress, 'Despite your beauty and virtue, who knows where the master goes? I run the shop all day.' She asked what to do; he said, 'Remove one of the master's moustaches—it will end his good looks; when he sleeps at night, shave off the moustache with a knife.' To the master he said, 'You are in the shop all day; the mistress locks up and goes off no one knows where; tonight when you sleep she will cut your throat—beware.' The master came home and pretended to sleep quietly; the mistress came with a knife, and as she lifted the cloth from his face he snatched the knife and made ready to kill her. Then the servant said, 'Sir, listen, do not do this—I have taken my wage, that is, I told one lie. If a single lie can threaten life, what will happen from lying many times?'
