आज्ञा विधायिनी तुष्टा, दक्षा साध्वी विचक्षणा। एभिरेव गुणैर्युक्ता, श्रीरेव स्त्री न संशयः।। तारुणं लावण्यं पिय, पिम्मं भूषणाई सम्भारो। सव्वो पलाल सरिसो, एक्के ण विणा सुपुत्तेण।।

जो योग्य पात्र में त्याग करने वाला हो, 2.गुणों में राग करने वाला हो, 3.भोग में परिजनों के साथ रहता हो, 4.शास्त्रों का ज्ञाता हो और 5.युद्ध में योद्धा हो वही पाँच गुणों को धारण करने वाला पुरुष कहलाता है। उस सेठ की स्त्री का नाम जिनदत्ता था, वह जिनदत्ता भी परम धार्मिक, सम्यक्त्वादि गुणों से सहित, दक्षता आदि गुणों के समूह से मूर्तिमान, लक्ष्मी के समान तथा समस्त लक्षणों से युक्त थी, जैसा कि कहा है- '1.जो आज्ञा कारिणी हो, 2.सन्तुष्ट हो, 3.दक्ष हो, 4.साध्वी हो, 5.पतिव्रता हो तथा 6.विदुषी हो इन गुणों से युक्त स्त्री लक्ष्मी ही है इसमें संशय नहीं है।' जिनदत्ता यद्यपि इस प्रकार के गुणों से विशिष्ट थी, परन्तु बन्ध्यात्व नामक दोष से युक्त थी, किसी भी उपाय से उसको पुत्र नहीं हुआ था, एक दिन अवसर पाकर उसने अपने पति से कहा! पुत्र के विना कुल सुशोभित नहीं होता है, तथा वंश का विच्छेद भी हो जायगा, इसलिए सन्तान की वृद्धि के लिए आप दूसरा विवाह करने योग्य हैं, जैसा कि कहा है- 'जवानी, लावण्य, प्रेम, आभूषण इत्यादि सभी सुपुत्र के विना भूसा के सामान है।'

He who gives to worthy recipients, loves virtue, enjoys pleasures with his kin, knows the scriptures, and is a warrior in battle—such a man is said to bear the five marks. That merchant's wife was named Jinadatta; she too was supremely religious, endowed with right faith and other virtues, an embodiment of skill and the like, like the goddess Lakshmi, and possessed of all good marks, as it is said: 'A woman who is obedient, contented, capable, chaste, devoted to her husband and learned—endowed with these virtues she is Lakshmi herself, there is no doubt.' Though Jinadatta was distinguished by such virtues, she suffered from the defect of barrenness, and by no means could she bear a son. One day, finding the occasion, she said to her husband, 'A family is not adorned without a son, and the lineage too will be cut off; so for the sake of offspring you are fit to marry again,' as it is said: 'Youth, beauty, love, ornaments and the rest are all like chaff without a good son.'
