गणेशप्रसाद वर्णी जी जब पढ़ते थे, तो एक दिन एक भङ्गेड़ी के चक्कर में पड़ गये, उसने कहा कि भाँग खाने से शिवजी दिखते हैं, वर्णी जी ने सोचा हमें भी अरहन्त भगवान् दिख जायेंगे, तो उन्होंने भाँग खाली, उसका नशा चढ़ गया, और अपने गुरु अम्बादास जी की अविनय कर दी, गुरू ने नशा उतरने पर पूँछा, भाँग खाई थी? तो सही बता दिया, कि अर्हन्त भगवान् के दर्शन के लोभ में खाई थी, अब ऐसी गलती नहीं करेंगे कपट हीन होने पर शिष्य की मूर्खता भी गुरु का हृदय जीत लेती है।

When Ganeshprasad Varni ji was a student, one day he fell in with a bhang-addict, who told him that eating bhang lets one see Lord Shiva. Varni ji thought, 'Then I too will get to see the Arihant Bhagavan,' and ate bhang; the intoxication took hold and he behaved disrespectfully toward his guru Ambadas ji. When the intoxication wore off the guru asked, 'Did you eat bhang?' He told the truth—that he had eaten it out of longing to see the Arihant Bhagavan and would never make such a mistake again. When one is free of guile, even a disciple's foolishness wins the guru's heart.
