1978 में आचार्य श्री विद्यासागर जी के पास जापान से एक दल आया, आचार्य श्री ने उन्हें एक पुस्तक दी उन्होंने पूँछा ये पुस्तक किस धर्म की है? आचार्य श्री ने कहा जैन धर्म की, उन्होंने कहा हम नौजवान हैं धर्म नहीं मानते, आचार्य श्री ने कहा! दुनिया में ऐसा कोई नहीं जो धर्म को न मानता हो, आप कैसे कह रहे हैं? तब आचार्य श्री ने कहा, आपके शिर में कोई लाठी मारे तो कैसा लगेगा, युवक बोला! बुरा लगेगा, और कोई पट्टी बाँधे तो कैसा लगेगा? युवक बोला! अच्छा लगेगा, आचार्य श्री बोले! बस यही तो अधर्म और धर्म है, तब युवक बोला कि धर्म ऐसा है तो हम मानते हैं, आचार्य श्री ने कहा धर्म विशाल है, मात्र विधि विधान को ही धर्म नहीं कहते हैं।

In 1978 a group from Japan came to Acharya Shri Vidyasagar ji; he gave them a book, and they asked which religion's book it was. Acharya Shri said, of Jainism. They said, we are young and do not believe in religion. Acharya Shri said, there is no one in the world who does not believe in dharma; how can you say so? Then he asked: if someone strikes your head with a stick, how does it feel? The youth said, bad. And if someone binds it with a bandage? The youth said, good. Acharya Shri said, that itself is adharma and dharma. Then the youth said, if dharma is this, we accept it. Acharya Shri said, dharma is vast; mere ritual and rules are not called dharma.
