लोकमूढ़ता- आश्विन मास में लोग नदी में खड़े होकर पूर्वजों को पानी दे रहे थे, पण्डित बनारसीदास जी अपने घर की ओर मुँह करके पानी देने लगे, किसी ने पूछा क्या कर रहे हो? पण्डितजी ने कहा घर में गाय प्यासी बँधी है उसको पानी पिला रहे हैं, लोगों ने कहा यहाँ से गाय की प्यास कैसे बुझ जायगी? पण्डितजी ने कहा! जब आपके मृतक पूर्वज तृप्त हो सकते हैं तो मेरी गाय की प्यास क्यों नहीं बुझ सकती है, तब लोगों को अपनी अज्ञानता का अहसास हुआ।

Worldly folly: in the month of Ashwin people stood in the river offering water to their ancestors; Pandit Banarsidas began offering water facing toward his own house. Asked what he was doing, he said, 'A thirsty cow is tied at my home, I am giving it water.' People said, 'How can the cow's thirst be quenched from here?' He replied, 'When your dead ancestors can be satisfied, why can't my cow's thirst be quenched?' Then the people realized their ignorance.
