The importance of worshipping the supremely serene, passionless image of the Supreme Self is this: the worldly soul remains deeply entangled in worldly illusion and household affairs, and because the mind is restless and the soul not yet strong, merely hearing the scriptures' description of the Supreme Self it cannot suddenly, without any model, draw the picture of the Supreme in its heart. Yet through that image such souls become able to meditate and reflect a little on the nature of the Supreme, and thereby advance toward attaining their own true nature, with cessation of future sorrows and sins. When a painter practises drawing, he first looks at simple, plain pictures and builds up his skill; he cannot at once draw a very difficult, deep and intricate picture. As his practice grows he begins to render even hard, coloured pictures beautifully, and to enlarge small pictures and shrink large ones. When he becomes an expert, he can effortlessly sketch even moving objects with great finesse, and without even looking at a subject, merely learning its layout and condition, he can draw a lifelike likeness. Just so, this worldly soul cannot at once meditate on the Supreme Self — that is, cannot draw the Supreme's photo within — so it builds its meditation upon the supremely passionless image of the Supreme. Through constant practice of viewing, when it grows familiar with the passionless likeness, then gradually, sitting in solitude, it draws that image's photo in its heart and becomes able to hold it for a while. Doing so, its mental and spiritual strength increase; then it becomes fit to draw in its heart the direct likeness of the embodied Lord Arhat with the glory of the samavasarana and so forth. Such meditation is called Rupastha meditation, and it usually occurs in the ascetic (muni) state.
