बंदर के अंदर-माया का समन्दर- एक किसान के पास तीन बैल थे, दो को जोतता था एक बँधा रहता था, बैल के समीप एक सीका था जो पेड़ पर टाँग रखा था, जिसमें किसान अपना नाश्ता रखता था, बन्दर बदमाशी करता था, डिब्बा खोलकर भोजन करके जूठन बैल के मुँह में लगा देता था, किसान ने भोजन गायब पाया और बैल का मुँह जूठा देखकर पिटाई करने लगा, बन्दर रोज चालाकी करता, दस-पन्द्रह दिन बीत गये, पड़ोसी ने देखा कि बैल को व्यर्थ में पीटता है, समझाया इसे क्यों पीटते हो? बैल इतने ऊँचे सीके तक कैसे पहुँच सकता है, वह इससे बहुत ऊपर है, किसान ने कहा जूठन तो इसी के मुँह में लगी है फिर सन्देह कैसा? उसने कहा! एक दिन तुम छिपकर देखों मामला क्या है, किसान ने स्वीकार किया, प्रतिदिन की तरह बन्दर आया, खाना खाया, जूठन बैल के मुँह में पोत दी, उसी तरह बैल तो हुआ पुण्य एवं बन्दर हुआ पाप, खोटी प्रवृत्ति पाप करता है, अपयश पुण्य का होता है।

An ocean of deceit inside the monkey — A farmer had three oxen; he yoked two and kept one tied up. Near the ox hung a sling-basket on a tree in which the farmer kept his breakfast. A mischievous monkey would open the box, eat the food, and smear the leftovers on the ox's mouth. Finding his food gone and seeing the ox's mouth soiled, the farmer began beating it. The monkey played this trick daily; ten or fifteen days passed. A neighbour saw him beating the ox for nothing and asked why. How could the ox reach so high a basket, far above it? The farmer said the leftovers are on its very mouth, so what doubt is there? The neighbour said: one day hide and watch what is really going on. The farmer agreed; as usual the monkey came, ate, and smeared the leftovers on the ox's mouth. Just so, the ox stands for merit and the monkey for sin — wicked conduct commits the sin, but the blame falls on the meritorious.
