ऊँट को जातिस्मरण- एक सेठ के यहाँ कन्या हुयी, सेठ के पास एक ऊँट था जो उस कन्या का पूर्व भव का पति था, सेठ ने कन्या की शादी की, तो दहेज में ऊँट दे दिया, वह कन्या ऊँट पर सवार हुयी, तो ऊँट को जातिस्मरण हो गया, कि ये मेरी पत्नि थी, अब मेरे ऊपर बैठी है, ऊँट बैठ गया आगे नहीं बढ़ा खूब पिटाई की, लेकिन नहीं उठा, कन्या को भी जाति स्मरण हो गया कि ये मेरा पति था, इसलिये बैठ गया, कन्या ने समझाया तुम्हारी पर्याय बदल गयी है, अब विकल्प मत करो, इस पर्याय में कड़वी नीम खाना पड़ती है और भार ढोना पड़ता है।

A camel's recollection of past births — A merchant had a daughter; he owned a camel that had been the girl's husband in a former life. When the merchant married off his daughter he gave the camel in dowry. As the girl rode the camel, it remembered its past life — that she had been its wife and now sat upon it — so it sat down and would not move despite a severe beating. The girl too gained recollection of her past birth, that this had been her husband, and understood why it sat down. She consoled it: your state of existence has changed, do not grieve now; in this life one must eat bitter neem and carry burdens.
