लोभी और मात्सर्य- एक व्यक्ति पर देवी प्रसन्न हो गयी, प्रकट होकर बोली जो मांगना हो मांग लो, जो माँगोगे उससे दूना नहीं माँगने वाले पड़ोसी को मिलेगा, पहले अब कौन मांगे, जो माँगे वो घाटे में, ईर्ष्यालु बोला मेरी एक आँख फूट जाय, और मेरे आँगन में एक कुँआ खुद जाय, विना माँगने वाले की दोनों आँखें फूट गयी, दो कुआं खुद गये, बेचारा अन्धा कुए में गिर कर मर गया, दूसरों को दुःखी करने से हम दुःख उठाते हैं।

'The greedy man and envy' — a goddess, pleased with a man, appeared and said, 'Ask for whatever you wish, but your neighbour who asks for nothing will receive double.' Now each hesitated, for whoever asked would seem the loser. The envious man said, 'Let one of my eyes burst, and let a well be dug in my courtyard.' The non-asking neighbour lost both eyes and got two wells; the blind wretch fell into a well and died. By making others miserable we bring misery on ourselves.
