बुद्धि, लज्जा, हिम्मत, तन्दुरुस्ती का निवास कहाँ- एक यात्री को यात्रा में क्रमशः चार स्त्रियाँ मिलीं, सबसे पहले खूबसूरत स्त्री मिली, यात्री ने पूछा! तुम कौन हो और कहाँ रहती हो? स्त्री ने जबाव दिया मैं बुद्धि हूँ और मनुष्य के दिमाग में रहती हूँ। दूसरी ने कहा मेरा नाम लज्जा है, और मैं मनुष्य की आँखों में रहती हूँ, शालीनता और सद्व्यवहार मेरा स्वभाव है। तीसरी स्त्री ने कहा मेरा नाम हिम्मत है, और मैं मनुष्य के हृदय में रहती हूँ। चौथी स्त्री ने कहा मेरा नाम तन्दुरुस्ती है और मैं मनुष्य के पेट में रहती हूँ। वह व्यक्ति बढ़ा और उसे चार पुरूष मिले, पहले पुरूष ने कहा मेरा नाम क्रोध है और मैं मनुष्य के दिमाग में रहता हूँ। यात्री ने कहा वहाँ बुद्धि रहती है तुम कैसे रह सकते हो? क्रोध ने कहा जब तक मैं नहीं आता हूँ तभी तक बुद्धि रहती है, और मेरे आते ही बुद्धि वहाँ से भाग खड़ी होती है। दूसरे पुरूष ने कहा मेरा नाम लोभ है और मैं पुरूष की आखों में रहता हूँ, यात्री ने कहा वहाँ लज्जा रहती है, लोभ ने कहा कुछ धन सम्पत्ति रखकर देखिये कि लज्जा किस प्रकार लोभी की आँखों से भागती है। तीसरे पुरूष ने कहा मेरा नाम भय है, और मैं लोगों के हृदय में रहता हूँ, यात्री ने कहा वहाँ हिम्मत रहती है तुम कैसे रह सकते हो? भय ने कहा लोग अन्तःकरण की आवाज नहीं सुनते और गलत कार्य करते रहते हैं और भयभीत भी रहते हैं, परिणाम स्वरूप हिम्मत वहाँ से चली जाती है, चौथे पुरूष ने कहा मेरा नाम रोग है और मैं मनुष्य के पेट में रहता हूँ। यात्री ने टोका लेकिन वहाँ तन्दुरुस्ती रहती है, पुरूष ने कहा बिल्कुल गलत, जब तक लोग सात्विक, सुपाच्य आहार की जगह गरिष्ठ भोजन, मांस, मदिरा, तम्बाकू आदि का सेवन करते रहेंगें और नियमित जीवन नहीं जियेंगे तब तक तन्दुरुस्ती वहाँ रह ही नहीं सकती, वहाँ फिर मैं ही रह सकता हूँ, यात्री स्त्री-पुरूषों के रूप में मिले सत्य के प्रकाश में आगे बढ़ गया।

'Where do intellect, modesty, courage and health dwell?' — a traveller met four women in turn. The first, most beautiful, said, 'I am Intellect and I live in man's mind.' The second said, 'My name is Modesty; I live in his eyes, and grace and good conduct are my nature.' The third said, 'I am Courage, and I live in man's heart.' The fourth said, 'I am Health, and I live in man's belly.' Going on, he met four men. The first said, 'I am Anger, I live in the mind.' 'But Intellect lives there,' said the traveller. 'She stays only until I arrive,' said Anger, 'and the moment I come she flees.' The second said, 'I am Greed, I live in the eyes.' 'But Modesty lives there.' 'Just set some wealth before a man and watch how Modesty flees a greedy man's eyes.' The third said, 'I am Fear, I live in men's hearts.' 'But Courage lives there.' 'People ignore their conscience and do wrong and stay fearful, so Courage departs.' The fourth said, 'I am Disease, I live in the belly.' 'But Health lives there.' 'Quite wrong — as long as people take heavy food, meat, liquor and tobacco instead of pure, digestible food and live irregularly, Health cannot stay there; then only I can.' The traveller went on, wiser in the truth revealed by these men and women.
