न्यायोपात्तधनो यजनगुणगुरुन्, सद्दीस्त्रिवर्गं भजन्, नन्योन्यानुगुणं तदर्ह गृहिणी, स्थानालयो ह्रीमयः। युक्ताहार विहार आर्यसमितिः, प्राज्ञः कृतज्ञो वशी, शृण्वन् धर्मविधिं दयालुरघभीः, सागार धर्मं चरेत्।।

न्याय पूर्वक धनोपार्जन करने वाला, गुणवानों की पूजा करने वाला, मिष्टवचन बोलने वाला, धर्म, अर्थ तथा काम पुरुषार्थ का एक दूसरे का घात न करने वाला, गृहस्थ धर्म के योग्य स्त्री, योग्य आवास, लज्जायुक्त, योग्य आहार-विहार वाला हो, सत्सङ्गति हो, बुद्धिमान हो, कृतज्ञ हो, इन्द्रियों को वश में रखने वाला हो, धर्मोपदेश सुनने वाला हो, दयालु हो, पापभीरु हो, ऐसा श्रावक होता है।

One who earns wealth justly, honors the virtuous, speaks sweet words, and pursues dharma, wealth, and desire without letting one harm another; who has a wife fit for household life, a proper home, modesty, wholesome food and habits, good company, intelligence, gratitude, control of the senses; who listens to religious teaching, is compassionate and afraid of sin — such is a true lay devotee.
