जैसे न चाहते हुए भी संसार के जीवों को गरीबी आदि का कष्ट भोगना पड़ता है, वैसे ही कर्म से पीड़ित ज्ञानी को भी न चाहते हुए भी भोग भोगना पड़ता है, अतः सम्यग्दृष्टि जीव भोगों का सेवन करते हुए भी उनका सेवन नहीं करता है, क्योंकि विना इच्छा के किया गया कर्म विरागी होता है।

Just as the beings of the world must suffer poverty and the like even against their will, so a wise person afflicted by karma must undergo enjoyments even unwillingly; therefore the right-visioned soul, though partaking of enjoyments, does not really partake of them, for an action done without desire is dispassionate.
