संसारी प्राणी गुरु से पूँछता है सुख कहाँ है? गुरु कहते हैं हमने अभी मगर को बताया है, उससे पूँछ लो, वह मगर से पूँछने गया, मगर ने कहा पहले हमें पानी पिला दो प्यास लग रही है, वह मनुष्य हँसता है कि पानी में रहकर भी प्यासा है, मगर भी कहता है, कि तुम भी हँसी के पात्र हो, सुख आत्मा का स्वभाव है तुम सुख को बाहर ढूँढ़ते हो। ज्यों तिली में तेल है, ज्यों चकमक में आग। तेरा प्रभु तुममें बसे, जाग-जाग रे जाग॥

A worldly being asks the guru, 'Where is happiness?' The guru says, 'I have just told the crocodile; go ask it.' The man went to ask the crocodile, and the crocodile said, 'First give me water to drink, I am thirsty.' The man laughs that a creature living in water is still thirsty; but the crocodile says, 'You too are laughable — happiness is the nature of the soul, yet you seek it outside.' As oil is within the sesame seed, as fire is within the flint, so your Lord dwells within you — awake, awake, O awake!
