एक बार पड़ोसन ने सास से पूँछा आपके घर की शान्ति का राज़ क्या है? सास ने कहा हमारी बेटी शक्कर है और बहु नमक के समान है, बहु ने सुना तो उसके व्यवहार में अन्तर आ गया, सास ने बहु से पूछा! बेटा क्या तुम्हारा स्वास्थ्य खराब है? बहु ने कहा कुछ नहीं हम तो पराये घर से आए हैं इसलिए नमक के समान हैं, और आपकी बेटी शक्कर के समान है, तब सास ने कहा! हमारा अभिप्राय यह था कि जैसे शक्कर पर्व के दिनों में विशेष रूप से काम आती है, उस प्रकार बेटी का कभी-कभी सुख मिलता है, किन्तु जैसे नमक प्रत्येक पदार्थ में काम आता है, वैसे ही हमारी बहु है, तब बहु प्रसन्न हुई, सही ज्ञान के अभाव में झगड़ा होता है।

A neighbour once asked the mother-in-law the secret of the peace in her home. She said, 'Our daughter is like sugar and our daughter-in-law is like salt.' The daughter-in-law overheard and her conduct changed. The mother-in-law asked, 'Child, is your health poor?' The daughter-in-law replied, 'Nothing, we come from another home so we are like salt, while your daughter is like sugar.' Then the mother-in-law said, 'My meaning was that just as sugar is needed specially on festival days, so a daughter brings joy only occasionally; but just as salt is useful in every dish, so is our daughter-in-law.' The daughter-in-law was delighted. Quarrels arise from the absence of right understanding.
