मूर्ख बेटे से पिता ने बार-बार कहा कि तू व्यापार नहीं कर सकता, न मजदूरी न भीख माँग सकता है, अत: वेद पढ़ेविना तेरा जीवन बेकार है, वह घर से भागा गङ्गा किनारे जाकर बैठ गया, बोला हे गङ्गा मैया जब तक मैं विद्वान नहीं बन जाऊँगा तब तक आहार जल का त्याग है, कई दिन हो गये, इन्द्र का आसन कम्पायमान हुआ, इन्द्र ने अप्सराओं को भेजा, अप्सराएं विप्र का वेश बनाकर मुट्ठी में रेत भरकर गङ्गा में फेंकने लगी, लड़के ने देखा पूछा ये क्या कर रही हो? अप्सराओं ने कहा हमें गङ्गा पार जाना है इसलिये पुल बना रहे हैं, उसने कहा ऐसे पुल नहीं बनता तो अप्सराओं ने कहा उसी प्रकार कोई भोजन छोड़कर विद्वान नहीं बनता अक्षर-अक्षर रटता पढ़ता है।

A father repeatedly told his foolish son, 'You cannot do business, nor labour, nor beg; so without studying the Vedas your life is useless.' The son ran away and sat on the bank of the Ganga, declaring, 'O Mother Ganga, until I become learned I renounce food and water.' Many days passed; Indra's throne trembled. Indra sent celestial maidens, who, disguised as brahmins, began throwing fistfuls of sand into the Ganga. The boy asked what they were doing. They said, 'We must cross the Ganga, so we are building a bridge.' He said, 'A bridge cannot be built this way.' They replied, 'Just so, no one becomes learned by giving up food — one studies letter by letter, by heart.'
