एक राजा की चोरी हो गयी, मन्त्री को एक सेठ पर द्वेष के कारण शक था, मन्त्री ने कहा इसने चोरी की होगी, निर्णय हुआ कि चोर के हाथ में अग्नि का गोला दिया जाय जो जलेगा वह चोर कहलायेगा, सेठ के सामने बड़ी विपत्ति आ गयी, अग्नि में तो सब जलेंगे चाहे चोर हो या साहूकार, किसी ने सलाह दी तुम हाथ में काठ रखलेना वह कुछ कहे तो कहना तुम हाथ से दो तो मैं हाथ में लूँगा, तुम सण्डासी से दोगे तो मैं काठ पर लूँगा, इसी तरह शिक्षक जैसा पढ़ायेगा विद्यार्थी वैसा ही बनेगा, क्योंकि विद्यार्थी शिक्षक का आचरण सीखता है।

A king was robbed; the minister, out of malice, suspected a certain merchant and said he must have done it. It was decided that a ball of fire be placed in the suspect's hand, and whoever got burned would be deemed the thief. Great trouble faced the merchant, for fire burns all — thief or honest man alike. Someone advised him: 'Hold a piece of wood in your hand; if questioned, say — if you hand it directly I will take it in my hand, but if you give it with tongs I will take it on the wood.' In the same way, as the teacher teaches, so the student becomes, for the student learns the teacher's conduct.
