अमावस्या और पूर्णमासी को सिद्धान्त ग्रन्थों का स्वाध्याय गुरुघातक है, चतुर्दशी को स्वाध्याय शिष्यघातक है, अष्टमी का स्वाध्याय दोनों को घातक है और प्रतिपदा स्वाध्याय का ही घात करने वाली है। अत: सिद्धान्त ग्रंथों का अध्ययन इन तिथियों में वर्जित है आराधना ग्रंथों का स्वाध्याय किया जाता है।

Studying the Siddhanta (doctrinal) texts on the new-moon and full-moon days destroys the teacher, on the fourteenth destroys the pupil, on the eighth destroys both, and study on the first lunar day destroys study itself. Therefore study of the Siddhanta texts is forbidden on these dates, and the Aradhana (devotional) texts are studied instead.
