A human being has five senses: sight (eyes), smell, hearing, taste and touch. Of these the most important is the eye. Without eyes, human life is extremely hard. One's nature is revealed through the eyes—whether a person is harsh, angry, gentle, affectionate or loving shows in his gaze. A person does two kinds of karma: meritorious and sinful. The eyes are a boon, yet through them one binds both merit and sin. On the one hand a good gaze can earn 100 percent meritorious karma; on the other, of the sinful karma one binds, about 83 percent occurs through the eyes and the remaining 17 percent through the other four senses—ear, nose, taste and touch. It is through the eyes that a person attains his goal. The eyes' contribution to the study of the Jinavani is vital; eyes are essential for acquiring knowledge.
