साहित्य का लक्षण मनुष्यता ही है, जिस पुस्तक से यह उद्देश्य सिद्ध नहीं होता, जिससे मनुष्य का अज्ञान कुसंस्कार और अविवेक दूर नहीं होता, जिससे मनुष्य शोषण और अत्याचार के विरुद्ध सिर उठाकर खड़ा नहीं हो पाता, जिससे वह छीना-झपटी, स्वार्थ परता और हिंसा के दल-दल से उबर नहीं पाता वह पुस्तक किसी काम की नहीं है।

The mark of literature is humanity itself; a book by which this aim is not achieved, which does not remove a person's ignorance, bad conditioning and indiscretion, which does not enable one to stand up against exploitation and oppression, which does not lift one out of the quagmire of grabbing, selfishness and violence—such a book is of no use.
