एक व्यक्ति के पास सौ का नोट है वह न पुण्य रूप है न पापरूप, उस नोट को दान में दिया जा रहा है तो पुण्य रूप है, शराब खरीदी जा रही है तो पापरूप, उसी प्रकार वर्गणाएँ होती हैं, पाप भाव से पाप रूप पुण्य भाव से पुण्य रूप परिणमन कर जाती हैं।

A person has a hundred-rupee note; in itself it is neither merit nor sin; if that note is given in charity it becomes merit, if it buys liquor it becomes sin; likewise the karmic particles transform into sin through sinful intent and into merit through virtuous intent.
