वचन से बढ़कर लेख को प्रमाण माना जाता है क्योंकि लेख की प्रमाणिकता होती है, वचन तो भले ही बृहस्पति के द्वारा ही क्यों न कहे गये हो फिर भी प्रतिष्ठा नहीं होती है। ज्ञान राशि के संचित कोष का नाम साहित्य है।

The written word is held more authoritative than the spoken, for writing carries authenticity; speech, though spoken even by Brihaspati, gains no standing. Literature is the name of the accumulated treasury of knowledge.
