जैसे लेकर न चुकाया हुआ ऋण यहाँ-वहाँ बन्धनकारी होता है, वैसे ही किया हुआ पाप भी इस लोक या परलोक में फल भोगे बिना या प्रायश्चित्त आदि किए बिना नष्ट नहीं होता है।

Just as a debt taken but not repaid binds one here and there, so too a sin committed is not destroyed in this world or the next without its fruit being borne or without penance and the like being performed.
