सुनना चाहते हैं इसीलिए न सुनने का दुःख होता है। देखना चाहते हैं इसीलिए न दिखने का दुःख होता है। बल चाहते हैं इसीलिए निर्बलता का दुःख होता है। जवानी चाहते हैं इसीलिए वृद्धावस्था का दुःख होता है। तात्पर्य है कि वस्तु के अभाव में दुःख नहीं होता, वस्तु की चाहत से, उसके अभाव का अनुभव करने से दुःख होता है।

We wish to hear, so not hearing brings sorrow; we wish to see, so not seeing brings sorrow; we wish for strength, so weakness brings sorrow; we wish for youth, so old age brings sorrow. The point is: sorrow comes not from a thing's absence, but from craving it and feeling its absence.
