'आशा' एक नदी है जिसमें मनोरथ रूपी जल है, तृष्णा रूपी तरंगें उठ रही हैं, राग रूपी मगरमच्छ है, वितर्क रूपी पक्षी है, यह नदी धैर्य रूपी वृक्ष को उखाड़ फेंकने वाली है, इसमें अज्ञान रूपी भँवर हैं, जिनके पार जाना कठिन है और जो अतिगहन हैं, इसके चिन्ता रूपी तट बहुत ऊँचे हैं, इसके पार जाकर विशुद्ध मन वाले योगीराज ही आनन्दित होते हैं।

'Hope' is a river whose water is longing, in which waves of craving rise, with crocodiles of attachment and birds of vain reasoning; this river uproots the tree of patience, has whirlpools of ignorance hard to cross and very deep, and its banks of worry are very high—only the great yogis of pure mind rejoice on reaching its far shore.
