दीपक में जब तक स्नेह/तेल रहता है तब तक उसे जलना पड़ता है और जब स्नेह/तेल समाप्त हो जाता है तब वह निर्वाण को प्राप्त हो जाता है-बुझ जाता है, इसी प्रकार संसारी जीव स्नेह-प्रीति के कारण दुःखी होता है और प्रीति त्यागकर निर्वाण-मोक्ष को प्राप्त होता है। स्नेह रहित को इष्टवियोग और अनिष्ट संयोग से उत्पन्न दुःख नहीं होता।

As long as there is oil (also 'affection') in a lamp, it must keep burning, and when the oil is spent it attains nirvana—it goes out; likewise a worldly soul suffers because of affection and attachment, and by renouncing attachment attains liberation. One free of affection feels no sorrow from separation from the loved or union with the unloved.
