संघ में स्वाध्याय गौण वैय्यावृत्ति प्रधान होती है क्योंकि वैय्यावृत्ति करने वाला उपगूहन, वात्सल्य, स्थितिकरण और निर्विचिकित्सा इन चार अंगों से मंडित होता है। यदि ये गुण नहीं है तो कोई वैय्यावृत्ति नहीं कर सकता, जो तीर्थंकर प्रकृति की सोलह कारण भावनाओं में से एक है।

In the monastic order, self-study is secondary and selfless service is primary, for one who serves is adorned with four qualities: shielding, affection, steadying, and freedom from disgust. Without these qualities none can serve—service being one of the sixteen contemplations that bind the Tirthankara nature.
