जिस प्रकार महाव्रतों में ब्रह्मचर्य उत्कृष्ट है, मन्त्रों में कर्म को जीतने वाला णमोकारमन्त्र श्रेष्ठ है। अन्य मन्त्रों के फलदायक होने पर भी यही मन्त्र सेवनीय है क्योंकि यद्यपि वृक्ष अग्रभाग में फल देता है तथापि इसकी जड़ ही सींची जाती है अर्थात् यह मन्त्र सब मन्त्रों का मूल है तथा समस्त मंगलों में पहला मंगल है।

Just as celibacy is supreme among the great vows, the karma-conquering Namokar Mantra is supreme among mantras. Though other mantras bear fruit, this mantra alone is worth serving, for although a tree bears fruit at its top, it is its root that is watered—that is, this mantra is the root of all mantras and the first of all auspicious things.
